En nuestra sexta y última semana en Barcelona, hacemos una llamada con Nikita Ponda, farmacéutica de profesión y enlace comunitario con Refugees Welcome desde 2020. Nikita y yo hablamos sobre su viaje desde Londres a Sudamérica, luego España y Cataluña. También discutimos cómo se unió por primera vez a Refugees Welcome y cómo la organización la ha ayudado a encontrar una comunidad en la gran ciudad desde entonces. Nikita también nos habla sobre la forma en que Refugees Welcome financia arreglos de vivienda para refugiados políticos y otras personas que buscan hacer una nueva vida en un país extranjero. In our sixth and final week in Barcelona, we hop on a call with Nikita Ponda, a pharmacist by trade and community liaison with Refugees Welcome since 2020. Nikita and I talk about her journey from London to South America, then Spain and Catalunya. We also discuss how she first joined forces with Refugees Welcome, and how the organization has helped her find a community in the big city ever since. Nikita also sheds light on the way in which Refugees Welcome funds living arrangements for political refugees and others seeking to make a new life for themselves in a foreign country. It’s an engaging discussion that I enjoyed very much, and which I hope listeners of Los Cuentos de Los Angeles enjoy as well.

Paula nos cuenta la historia de sus padres y su relación con la guerra civil española, sobre la comida y cultura que conoce como auténtica Catalana, y sobre sus estudios en la Universidad de Barcelona como alumna de tercer año allí. También hablamos sobre el turismo en Barcelona, incluidos los sitios que recomienda para los visitantes, y cómo imagina la combinación de arte y trabajo social para comunidades en Madrid y más allá. ¡Es una charla que me encanto organizar, y espero escuchar lo que los oyentes de Los Cuentos de Los Angeles hacen de ella! 🤞🏽

This week, we sit down with Paula Martínez, who was born and raised in the city of Barcelona, and who is also a Social Work Intern with Refugees Welcome in Barcelona.

Paula tells us the story of her parents and its relation to the Spanish civil war, about the food and culture that she knows as a true Catalonian, and about her studies at the University of Barcelona as a third-year student there. We also talk about tourism in Barcelona, including the sites she recommends for visitors, and how she envisions combining art and social work for communities in Madrid and beyond. It’s a chat I loved hosting, and I look forward to hearing what listeners of Los Cuentos de Los Angeles make of it! 🤞🏽

Esta semana, nos unimos a una llamada con Richard Lamah, originario de Guinea-Conakri, que llegó a España hace casi seis años después de un viaje en el que arriesgó su vida a través de Marruecos para llegar a la ciudad autónoma española de Ceuta, donde comenzó su solicitud de asilo político.

Our conversations continue with the people who make up the incredible city of Barcelona and its surrounding communities. This week, we hop on a call with Richard Lamah, originally from Guinea-Conakry, who arrived in Spain almost six years ago after a life-risking journey through Morocco to reach the autonomous Spanish city of Ceuta, where he began his application for political asylum.

Richard and I go over the details of this lengthy journey, as well as how his time with Refugees Welcome has allowed him to better ingratiate himself as an African man in Spanish society. It’s an exceptional chat, and I look forward to hearing what the Los Cuentos de Los Angeles listenership makes of it! 🤞🏽
